Arxiv.org is moving to what they call a “collaboratively governed, community supported resource.” The pre-print server used to be exclusively funded and maintained at Cornell. Over the past few years they have been exploring the development of a more sustainable business model that will relieve some of the fiscal pressure from Cornell while still maintaining an open server that will allow the fast dissemination of scholarly research pre-prints that it is so well known for.
Why does this matter to you?
uWaterloo library recognizes that uWaterloo research are among the heaviest users of Arxiv.org worldwide. Therefore, we agreed to contribute to Arxig.org in 2010 and 2011 at the Tier 1 level of support. (Supporters 2010, 2011). This is intended to help Arxiv.org during the “3-year interim strategy (2010-2012)” that will result in the framework for their new business plan.
What else is changing?
Arxiv.org is also changing their interface! They are working with CERN to migrate to Invenio. You might already be familiar with the interface if you use the integrated High-Energy Physics database Inspire.

The Association of Research Libraries has recently published the Report of the Task Force on International Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Practices in the latest issue of Research Library Issues, June 2011. Members of this Task Force include our own University Librarian, Mark Haslett.
This is an important document stating the support ARL has for continuing ILL service across international boarders.
The report highlights their key findings which focus on the importance of ILL service in providing equitable international access to research in a cost saving and co-operative environment. They encourage that when dealing with publishers libraries should ensure that contracts include clauses that allow the international sharing of materials via ILL.
They also recommend that ILL makes a shifts towards electronic sharing, moving away from practices such as printing out articles for distribution as has been the practice for years. E-book interlibrary loan policies are also identified as an area that needs to be clarified. Ideally e-books would be able to be loaned temporarily just like their print counterparts, as a whole book not just selected pages.

There will be some great additions to the Library’s TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) materials. These materials are highly sought after and will make TOEFL materials for students more accessible.
The materials will be placed in the Dana Porter Library controlled access collection. Controlled access materials should be requested at the circulation desk.
